Building Diverse Teams:
Is hiring and retaining competent and productive employees important to you?  Is your work environment inclusive?  Does it reflect the communities within which you live and work?

An inclusive work environment is valuable because it lowers workplace stress by decreasing conflict.  It frees up energy for “getting the job done” and it meets the needs of a rapidly changing and diverse customer base.

In this powerfully experiential program employees will learn that stereotypical beliefs everyone has toward those who are different may be normal, but block productivity.  They will experience poignant activities that demonstrate how these stereotypical assumptions inhibit effective teamwork.

Here’s some of what they’ll learn:

  • Determine which stereotypes of others are operating and how to move beyond them

  • Are all of us biased?  The answer may surprise everyone

  • Implicit stereotyping:  What is it and do you have it?

  • The number one cause of diversity conflicts

  • How to stay cool in the face of conflict

  • Diversity conflicts:  What causes them and how to handle them with grace

  • A hostile work environment:  What is it and what can be done about it

Managing Foreign-Born Employees:
With America’s unemployment rate lower than it has been in decades, more and more employers are turning to foreign-born workers.  Some of the more common challenges include communication, foreign workers’ lack of understanding of American workplace laws and mores, and motivation issues.  Certainly many new problems arise requiring new solutions.

Possible topics (these can vary significantly):

  • Creating an inclusive work environment for all employees

  • Increasing supervisors’ awareness of employees’ cultures and applying to a fresh problem-solving approach to challenges

  • Brief Spanish/Haitian Creole language lessons

  • Determine unacceptable workplace behavior and a process to communicate to all employees
